R.J. Mitte, ‘Walt Jr’ on Breaking Bad, Talks About Sunday’s Series Finale [Audio]
We were lucky and honored to have RJ Mitte, Lafayette native and star of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” on the phone this week to give us his final thoughts on Walter White, and what fans can expect from this Sunday’s series finale of the show. RJ and I were both as careful as we could be not to reveal any spoilers, so if you’re currently watching on Netflix to get caught up, you should be just fine.
I’ve seen you say in interviews that the “Breaking Bad” ending is “inevitable.” How much more inevitable can this thing get?
This guy has made his path; this guy has carved his way through his life in blood. Once you do that, you can’t go back. You can’t change your past, and you can’t change your future. At the end of the day, he was doing what was right for his family, but along the way something happened. He stopped doing this for his family and started doing this for him.
What’s weird is, myself and fans of the show still pull for him. We want you guys to go back to a “happy family” – but like you said, at this point, there is no going back for Walter White.
He’s taken this life, and he’s become a different person. He IS Heisenberg. He’s not Walter White anymore, he’s Heisenberg. When you go and live the life he lived, and try to define yourself in this different world, you slowly forget who you were and where you’ve come from.
Why do you think so many people are still rooting for this horrible human being? We all want to see him somehow get out of it this Sunday.
Well, you know, he’s making these decisions for the right reasons. It’s about a man whose back is against the wall. What would YOU do in that situation? What would you do to provide for you family when you have no other way? I think a lot of people feel the way Walt felt. I think a lot of people know what it’s like to have no way out… to have no one to turn to.
What is the craziest offer you’ve gotten to reveal the ending of “Breaking Bad”?
Oh, I have had some crazy ones. They keep getting better the closer we get to the end date. I’ve found people will do anything to find out.
I’ve read that you’ve pretty much grown up on the set of “Breaking Bad”. How has it been for you, a young actor coming up in Hollywood being able to work with these amazing actors like Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn?
It’s been amazing being able to learn everything I’ve learned from them. I’ve been with them since I was 14 years old; I’m 21 now. It’s been insane. I will continue to learn so much from what they’ve taught me.
So far I think we’ve successfully done this interview with no spoilers.
I think we’re good with the no spoilers, but get ready… we have an amazing time. Everything that happens and the way it comes together is completely insane.
