If you love water parks, then a trip to Grapevine, Texas is surely a place you'll want to plan a trip. (Even if you've been before.)

A long-awaited, massive new water park is finally coming to fruition. It will include both indoor and outdoor water parks, an entertainment center and a 12-story resort.

The City Council approved the rezoning for Stand Rock Hospitality's water park resort to be located just north of Grapevine Mills Mall, located along State Highway 121. The new park will be called Grapevine Resort Water Park.

The gigantic 661-room resort will feature a two-acre outdoor water park along with a 95,000-square-foot indoor water park. Add in more than 400 hotel rooms and 166 timeshare units that will make up the 12-story resort.

The resort will also include more than 24,000 square feet of meeting space and 65,000 square feet of entertainment space.

The new resort will become the second-largest development in Grapevine trailing the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center.

Of course, most people know about Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. It's located less than four miles away from this planned new resort and the two will be in direct competition for entertainment dollars.

However, Stand Rock Hospitality representative Stuart Zadra said that this won't be an issue for either resort.

"We play well together because kids love water," he said.

Zadra also said they anticipate needing 400-450 employees to staff the resort and water park.

Plans for this new development have been in the works for a while now. It was initially approved in 2016 with zoning variances later approved in 2018. But since that last approval, no progress was made toward the completion of the project, so permits expired.

This is not the first resort for Stand Rock Hospitality. The Wisconsin-based company has four resorts in that state plus Wilderness at the Smokies east of Knoxville, which is the largest indoor water park in Tennessee, and Camelback Lodge & Indoor Waterpark in the Poconos Mountains of Pennsylvania.

Groundbreaking for the project will be in late spring or early summer of 2023 with an anticipated opening for spring 2025.
