Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis aren't generally talked about in the public eye. One 12-year-old girl from Livonia is hoping to change that with her brand of salad dressing.

Maddie Plauche makes and sells her own salad dressing, Maddie's Sensation Dressing, that is diet friendly to people with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis affect more than 1.6 million people, according to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.

Plauche was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, which causes ulcers in the colon, when she was around 9-years-old. The disease caused her to miss school often.

Maddie wanted to attend Camp Oasis to meet other kids like her. She began saving, but knew that she would never raise enough money to go. So, she had another idea that came to fruition earlier this year.

Her father was know, especially around the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office, for making his version of Sensation salad dressing. Maddie asked if they could bottle it and sell it as a fundraiser.

He agreed, thinking the idea was a passing thought...and then it blew up.

Initially the dressing they were making was the original recipe that included acidic foods, which people with inflammatory bowel diseases have to avoid. So, they cut the lemon and vinegar to make a creamy, diet friendly dressing.

They now have the dressing in original or diet friendly, and a seasoned butter.

They have sold over 3,000 bottles since February, and don't plan to stop now. They were acting under Louisiana's cottage industry regulations that allow products to be sold in small numbers. The family is now renting space in a commercial kitchen so they're able to sell their product in more stores.

Maddie was able to attend Camp Oasis, and is better handling her disease. She's even able to stay a whole day at school, which was not a normal case before. She's also on the volleyball team at her school.
