Here's something I never thought we'd see again. Go cups are legal again in the three areas that were taken away five years ago!

The City-Parish Council voted Tuesday to allow bar and club patrons to walk outside with their drink, so long as it's in a plastic, styrofoam, or paper cup!

Back in 2010, the Council voted to outlaw go-cups in three areas with clusters of bars. Downtown, McKinley St., and Simcoe were the only areas that you couldn't walk outside with an alcoholic beverage in a go-cup.Councilman Brandon Shelvin sponsored the move to bring go-cups back.

"Now it puts all establishments with an alcohol permit on a level playing field," he said Wednesday. "I've always said the ordinance, when it was passed in 2010, was arbitrary and capricious to the downtown area, the Simcoe area and the McKinley Street area. Those are the only areas where it's illegal to walk down the street with a go-cup."

Had the smoking ban passed, this would have more of an impact, as smokers could carry their drinks outside while smoking. By now I'm sure you've heard that didn't pass.

Shelvin still stands by his move to bring go-cups back. He says that he spoke with several bar and club owners who are going to go smoke free voluntarily, and their patrons will need the go-cup to walk outside to smoke.
