UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: No injuries have been reported in the accident that has Interstate 10 closed between Scott and Duson.

Lafayette Fire Department spokesperson Alton Trahan said emergency personnel responded to the scene after an 18-wheeler driver called saying smoke was emitting form his liquid tanker trailer.

The tanker was transporting molten sulphur.

Scott Fire Department, Lafayette Fire Department Hazmat Unit, State Police Hazmat, and DEQ responded to the scene.

Trahan said a "small leak" was quickly contained and stopped. The insulation between the tank and the exterior wrapping was smoldering. After removing some of the exterior wrapping the smoldering insulation was extinguished. (Editor's Note: Trahan noted the yellow material under the truck in the photo below is insulation from the tanker.)

Hazmat crews monitored air quality to ensure everything was safe for nearby residences. No evacuations were required.

Emergency crews are awaiting a private company to transport the tanker to a safe area to off load the product.
