This isn't some Onion article...it's one of the most ironic stories I've read in awhile though. The pine tree that was planted in 2004 in memory of The Beatles guitarist, George Harrison, has been killed...by beetles.

The tree was planted in 2004 at Griffith Park in Los Angeles because Harrison spent his final days in LA, and because he was an avid gardner for much of his adult life. Harrison passed away in 2001.

From the LA Times:

Except for the loss of tree life, Harrison likely would have been amused at the irony. He once said his biggest break in life was getting into the Beatles; his second biggest was getting out.

The tree had grown to be more than 10 feet tall by 2013, but the barrage of tree beetles was too much for it.

There are plans to replant the tree in the near future.
